Malaga vs Alcorcon 2020

Málaga secure survival in LaLiga Smartbank

In a very tight Segunda Division, Málaga CF has spent most of the season around the middle of the table. Both playoffs for promotion and relegation spot for Segunda B has been within reach. After the corona break there's been too many draws to keep the playoff hopes alive. However, the ghost of relegation did not let go until the final home game of the season.

The opponent, AD Alcorcón, were still fighting for playoffs, but Málaga came out on top with a solid 2-0 win. This result concludes that both clubs will continue playing in LaLiga Smartbank next season.

Both goals were beautiful, Juanpi in the first half and Tete Morente in the second half. Watch the goals on YouTube, click here

Málaga stays on as the European Capital of Sports

Numerous sporting events has either been postponed or canceled due to the Corona pandemic. In light of this, an agreement has been reached between the City Council of Malaga and ACES Europe, the body behind the award.

Lisbon has originally been given the award for 2021, and will now share this status with Málaga for the first six months of next year.

Málaga CF change the club logo

The province of Malaga is also affected by the coronavirus, with a total of 271 deaths per Tuesday, May 12th. In the photo we can see Málaga CF's new shield, in solidarity with those affected by Covid-19. The shield forms a heart, with the upper part a symbol of infinity. The football is also featured, as are the lines from the original club logo, a union of love, solidarity, sports and Malaga. The club is now selling solidarity t-shirts with this shield, and the money raised from the sale will go to the fight against Covid-19.

Cautious optimism is reported from Malaga on Tuesday the 12th of May. No registered deaths from the coronavirus for the second consecutive day, and only eleven new cases of infection were registered in the last 24 hours.

European Capital of Sports

The year 2020 will be a special one for Málaga. The city is awarded the European Capital of Sports, which involves an extra focus on sports and outdoor activities throughout the year. The goals as European Capital of Sports 2020 are:

 - to stimulate sports activities among the local population.

 - in addition to big events in well-known and popular sports like football and basket, it is a stated goal to promote sports that are less known by the locals, such as water polo.

 - to promote physical activities in nature, let it become a part of everyday life from an early age.

There are great expectations being awarded the European Capital of Sports, and it will definitely help put Málaga on the map. As you probably know, the city is already well-known within culture and gastronomy, and now everything is set for several big sporting events in the area.

Among the most important events, Málaga will host the finals of the Basketball Copa del Rey between February 13th-16th. If you're interested to know more about what's happening throughout the year, you can visit the homepage where the calendar will be updated continuously.
